yesterday morning when i got dressed I picked my tower of londom tshirt. its gray and i wanted something to match my low key Sunday kind of mood. its a great shirt. its got a shield with 3 lions and a banner that says royal beasts.
It also has these three little lions on the back between the shoulders that gets kind of covered up by hair, but I like having them there anyway. I do kind of wish it said Tower of London really big or something so everyone who saw it knew I've been to the tower of London. Or know someone who has. Or at least saw it at a thrift shop and bought it because I wanted everyone to think I had been there. But you know how it goes. You get what you get and you don't throw a fit.
back in the day, one of the many things going on at the tower was a royal managerie of sorts. people would give the king crazy animals from their countries and he would keep them in the tower. sadly, it was rare that anyone who worked at the tower knew jack about exotic animals so eventually they would die from misery, but I guess it was fun for the king while it lasted. anyway, while h and i were visiting the tower that was the big theme they were focused on. there were fake wild animals all around in places where they might have been hostorically kept and lots of signs telling all about it.
I was freezing the day we visited the tower. it was sunny, but it was cold and i was lacking in layers. at this point we were staying with my cousin in oxshott so I couldn't just run back to the hotel for more clothes (plus if you remember I not only packed insanely light, I left a very crucial shirt on the aran islands the first week of the 4 week trip). I decided it was a fantastic reason to buy a tower tshirt. this one was cheap, and cute enough, and most importantly a 2x. I bought it and went in my favorite tower bathroom (yes I have one. check out how awesome the building they keep it in is.) took off a layer and added the shirt in. it did the job. I was warmer.

so i was wearing this shirt last night when spike and i sat down on the couch to see what was on the TiVo. "what's this lost world episode?" I asked, and since he didn't seem to know either I checked it out. lost world of henry the 8th. dig it. I pushed play.
they showed lots of places I've seen before. some of them twice. because I'm all anglophile and because Tudor England is my second favorite time and place right behind first century BC Rome. mostly because I seriously love queen elizabeth 1. but also because I am fascinated by the craziness of henry 8 and the true insanity of the time between his death and Elizabeth's coronation. so I watched them talk about Hampton court and pointed out to spike that they were really kind of lying when they would talk about how henry built it when we all know his friend cardinal wolsey really built it for himself and then henry made him give it to him instead. spike did not care. neither did most of the people watching the show I bet.
and then I saw ruins of a monastery he had robbed and put out of business.
I saw the tiny bits of Whitehall palace that I didn't see because there hidden away in government buildings, but I also saw streets that were built over its remains, where I walked just so i could know I walked where Elizabeth used to walk. and then of course they showed the tower. which leads back to why I spent all that time telling you about my shirt. because I was wearing it when i was watching a show that was not only showing bits of the tower, but also the cute building that houses the bathrooms where I changed into it (although they didn't show that building where I bought it). and i just kind of loved that serendipity, and thought it might be a little bit if history geek magic, so I wanted to tell you.
so i did.
