For hundreds of years after my man Julius Caesar was killed, Rome had some seriously wacked out rulers. First their was Augustus who was more of an ass than really crazy or evil. Next came Tiberius who was really wicked and evil and seriously sick in his head. He raised the next in line, Caligula whom you've probably heard of. Thing is, when Caligula started out, he wasn't so bad. He must have been seriously demented by his early life and being raised in the world of Tiberius, but he didn't do anything too deplorable as a ruler. At first. And then, according to historians, almost over night he became the most despicable ruler so far. What was up with that? Olden day sources blame it on a 'mysterious illness'. Today's scientists blame it on what was added to their bad wine, cooked up in lead pots. And Caligula loved to drink. Silly Romans. Lead is bad. But they liked the way it tasted.
That's my Roman history lesson for today. I have been all about Rome lately. I know it's not till the end of my trip but man I am excited to visit Rome again. So much leftover ancient stuff, littered all about the city. So much fascinating history. I can not wait.
I actually did a handful of trip planning today. Emailing. Sorting out the last of the hotel (hostel) changes. I bought one set of train tickets (the rest have to wait for one reason or another). I bought a case for Hannah's insulin that will keep it cooled for a few days at a time. I worked out transportation to and from the Roman airport. Oh, and reserved our spaces for our day trip to the Scottish Highlands - very exiting. We're leaving a month from yesterday.
Other than that, it's been a low key, laid back Sunday. Very nice.
Tomorrow will be a busy Monday. Not so nice but it tends to happen that way. Hannah has a doctor's appointment in the morning and then we have a bunch of outside the house chores to deal with. Hopefully we'll be home before it hits 100 degrees. Then there's stuff to get done at home before I have dinner with old friends. That should be quite fun. I'm looking forward to it.
So goodbye to July, my favorite month. You were far too hot, but I managed to enjoy you anyway. Starting tomorrow it will be August. Not my favorite month, but the month we'll hop a plane for the big magic adventure trip I've been planning forever. So welcome August. Feel free not to be so hot. Please.
